All Animals Listed by Attack Position (Level 0)

Within each position, I've listed the creatures by decreasing order of Offense = POWER x ACTIONS, which measures the creature's damage-per-turn capability. (Note that all 3-Way creatures inflict double or triple this damage initially by attacking multiple foes.) For a given Offense, multiple-action creatures have greater vulnerability to counterstrike, but can move in and out of combat more effectively and can reach higher damage through PW increases (Level 35 and the Brute +2 PW treasure). Creatures without clans are less useful, so I've listed them last for any given Offense.

How to Recruit New Animals

In order to recruit new animals, you must purchase Randomizers in a Shell Shop. You are only able to recruit animals native to your current map sector. For example, you can recruit Trikes in the map sector immediately west of the Starting sector. In order to recruit Shadow animals, you must travel several sectors to the northeast or northwest. You can’t carry randomizers across map sectors. You need to survive until the randomizer shop to obtain animals from a new sector.

Strongest Animals Starting Out

Since you only have limited randomizers to start, the most important criterion is to have a correct balance of 3 & 3 front and back rank animals.

Back rank animals are more scarce, especially since the Fairy and Cat are really anemic (and Eagle is badly outclassed). I put most of my attention into getting a good back rank setup. In my opinion, Gold Dragon, Blue Dragon, Dragon, Ghost, and Frog are all incredibly strong and can be taken all the way to the endgame (although Frog's lack of clan limits your spell power until you get spell power treasures). Octopus is also serviceable and I like it much better than the similar Foxbat. Eagle, Cat, and Fairy are weakest.

For the front ranks, I like all of the 3-way animals except Phoenix. The 3-way animals require more combat micromanagement to keep them from dying (especially fighting Castles), because they absorb so much counterstrike. If you are lazy and don't want to shuffle creatures around, the single-attack Trike is a runaway winner with 32 hp, 8x1, and Brute clan affiliation. Battering Ram does the most damage and is a great finisher at level 50 (13x2). Since you don't have enough randomizers in the beginning to build a perfect team, I look for a good mix of most front row animal with 26-32 hit points and an 8x1, 4x2, 7x1 or 6x1 attack. My personal play style is to morph my front rank into 3 Puppets or 3 Whales (or 2 and 1 Battering Ram), but it is convenient to mix in some single-way melee tanks when starting out.

Some of the best 3-way animals: Puppet, Whale, Grizzly, Lion, or Elephant.

Some of the best 1-way animals: Battering Ram, Trike, T-Rex, Shark, Camel, Gorilla, or Polar Bear.

Counterstrike-based animals (Python, Fire Beetle, Phoenix) don't cause enough damage and don't have enough hit points for my taste, although shuffling a single Python onto point position is a great strategy (Python presumably replaced eventually by Cobra). In my experience, the Unicorn and Penguin are dominated by the Puppet and the Whale. The Croc and the Storm Mare work fine but are lackluster offensively.

Where to Find Specific Animals

Whether you are hunting a specific animal for an experience gain, or looking to randomize a party member into a specific animal, you will want to go to a sector which can generate that animal. For instance if you are in the Start map, there is a 1 in 21 chance to randomly generate a Cat, but a 2 in 21 chance to get a Grizzly. This monster frequency table shows the chances of getting each specific animal in each of the different sectors.  Map names are the same as the ones listed on the Brute Wars Sector Maps page.

Strongest Animals in the Endgame

At maximum level, I like Cyclops, Grizzly, Puppet, or Whale for front rank fighters. Battering Ram, Trike, or T-Rex also work fine on the front wings, but the long list of weaker front-rank single-way animals can't compete. For back ranks, Ghost is the strongest as long as you play without reloading the game (to avoid the Magic Action +1 treasure glitch). Gold Dragon, Blue Dragon, and Dragon are always great for back ranks. Vulture, Shadow, and Ghost are plenty strong as well.

In almost any combination, the above-named animals will wipe out the entire enemy front three during your initial strike. You'll steamroll over every combat but the final five Castles (on the Cloud Level).

All Animals Listed by Position (with columns for Level 0, Castle=Level 25, and Treasures+MAX)

First set of columns shows each animal at Level 0.

Second set shows each animal at Level 25 (or equivalently, Level 0 ensconced in a Castle … +5 hp & +1 CT).

Third set shows your animals at Level 50, MAX'ed with all treasures (not including local terrain bonuses you might receive).
